Soddy Daisy is a small town in Jackson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The name Soddy Daisy originates from the nearby geographical feature of Soddy Fork. The forks in that location were called "Soddy" because they formed a gap in the mountains and provided access to various streams which flowed through the area. The name stuck and today's town takes its name from this geographic feature as well as another local landmark - Soddy Daisy Hotel which stands on an hill overlooking the community. The first settler in Soddy Daisy was James Dickey who arrived in 1837. Shortly thereafter other Scotsmen also moved into what is now Soddy Daisy and began farming land around present-day Streetsboro and Post Road. By 1850, most of present day Soddy Daisy had been established with a post office, stores, schoolhouse and churches existing by that time including First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1859 on what is now Main Street (later renamed creek Rd.). In 1865 when Jackson County was created it included parts of modern day Memphis and so post office operations ceased there until 1971 when they were reintroduced with new addresses due to growth within that county only making brief cameo appearances within Memphis proper before giving way to USPS drives serving all areas of Shelby County by 1980). In 1909 Johnnie Whitehead became headmaster of First Presbyterian School after serving as interim superintendent for several months while his predecessor resigned over financial irregularities related to his purchase of property adjacent to school grounds for $5,000 cash only without bidding or negotiation with neighboring schools! A year later he replaced Drury Witherspoon as Superintendent effective March 1st 1910 having served since December 9th 1908 followingDrury’s retirement from education after 36 years service! For many years throughout school history Mr Whitehead has been recognized as one of Tennessee’s leading educators followed by his successors Mrs Alice Crouch (1921-1985), Mrs Betty Henson (1986-present) & Msgr Rick Mims (2018-) who continue Headmastership at First Presbyterian School until current days! With such illustrious predecessors it would be difficult not to imagine how much progress has been made during their respective terms but sadly like so many others across America these days things have started going bad again especially across Hamilton Township where 8% percent poverty rate continues unabated despite multiple investment programs funded by city government including: Playground/Recreation Center/Dog Park; More than doubling public funding for arts & cultural events annually; more than doubling private funding for infrastructure projects; murder rate reduction efforts targeting high crime areas
