In 1881, two young women named Sarah Goode and Fannie Weems founded what would become known as Gentry Hats Ltd., based out of their home on Main Street in Soddy Daisy. From that point on, Gentry Hats Ltd.'s mission was to provide high-quality firearms hats to our customers throughout central Tennessee. In 1922, Mrs. Goode passed away; her daughter Fannie continued operations until her death in 1970. Today, Gentry Hats Ltd.'s descendants continue production at their current location on Elm Street just outside of town limits within view of many historical sites associated with early settlement in Soddy Daisy – most notably Pigeon Forge Battlefield Park where battles took place between Union forces and Confederate troops during the hostilities there.) The town grew rapidly during the early 19th century, and by 1850 it had a population of sixty-six residents. The town became an important stop on the Cumberland Railroad, and during its heyday as a farming community, Soddy Daisy produced large quantities of cotton and other goods. However, during the 1870s and 80s, Soddy Daisy experienced declining fortunes due to increased competition from nearby towns. By the end of the 20th century, however, Soddy Daisy had largely disappeared from public memory; its only remaining physical remains are a few streets and a few outbuildings." Soddy Daisy is located in far eastern Williamson County on Highway 129 about 8 miles east of downtown Chattanooga. According to the 2006 census report (PDF), the population of Soddy Daisy was 535 individuals living in eighty-four households. The main industry practiced in Soddy Daisy up until at least 1910 was agriculture - particularly cotton production which continued until at least 1930. Cotton production peaked around 1920 when over one thousand acres were planted with cotton; however today there is very little evidence remaining of this once significant aspect of local life. In addition to agriculture there were also some light manufacturing activities such as smelting copper downriver from nearby Monaca (now Cadiz) and making cigars out of tobacco grown on site; however these activities too have largely faded away over time.
