The Smyrna Telescope was built in 1902 by Dr. Jesse A. Weisberg and Dr. Charles Hodge as a research telescope for the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. It was first used for astronomy research, but soon became known for its use in spotting scopes during the early years of photography. In 1907, the telescope was moved to its current location on UT's campus, where it has continued to be used for education and research ever since.

In 1922, he observed an extrasolar planet called Proxima Centauri which was first discovered by radial velocity methods. This revealed that planets exist beyond our solar system and we were able to use this information to develop new theories about how planets form and evolve. Today, there are more than 100 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy and thousands of galaxies beyond ours waiting to be studied with advanced telescopes like NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and ESO’s Very Large Telescope

During World War II, Sylmar Air Force Base was established in Smyrna and during that time it played an important role in Allied warfare against Nazi Germany. After World War II ended, Smyrna experienced a period of economic decline which began to reverse beginning in the 1970s. However, recent efforts have aimed at revitalizing both its economy and its community have begun to Improve relations between all segments of society The history of Smyrna can be traced back to 1827 when pioneer James Witherspoon settled on land that would later become part of McMinn County (now part of Knoxville). Witherspoon named his new settlement "Smyrnia" after his native city of Samsun (modern-day Istanbul).smoky mountains
Smyrna was founded in 1809 by James Smyrna and his wife, Anna. The city became a village in 1823 and then a town in 1835. Smyrna was chartered as a city on November 1, 1881. The population of Smyrna peaked at 51,956 on December 15, 1951, but has slowly declined since then.
