Smyrna is a small town in Knox County, Tennessee. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga-area metropolitan area. Smyrna is home to the Smyrna High School and Smyrna United Methodist Church. The first permanent settler in Smyrna was John Stephenson, who named it after his native city of Stratholme, Scotland. He arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on the current site of the high school. In 1819, Stephenson married Anna Smallwood and set up a farm there that he ran until his death in 1841. Their son John Stephenson II also settled in Smyrna and continued to operate the farm until his death in 1865. In 1871, James Cates donated land to make way for what would become the high school. The first building on this site was erected in 1875 and served as both the elementary school and gymnasium before becoming the new high school building which stands today on its original location. The first graduating class from Smyrna High School graduated with diplomas on August 20, 1907 under then Superintendent Burritt Stevens III (1872-1945). In 1923, Drury University purchased property adjacent to campus which included much of what now makes up downtown Smyrna - including most of present-day First Baptist Church - for use as their main campus student body center (now known as Dormitory 3). Classes at Drury University were moved from their original buildings on North Broadway into Drury University's newly constructed facility beginning with classes during World War II when war damage made available many older buildings not used byDrury University proper. After World War II ended however classes continued relocated from Dormitory 3 into other facilities across campus while original Drury University structures were preserved for later use as offices/library/dining/entertainment complexes etc..
