In 1868, the club moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and continued to compete with handguns. In 1889, the club changed its name to the American Legion and began providing firearm training for members. In 1907, the American Legion moved from Knoxville to Memphis. In 1919, prohibition caused the American Legion to disbanded. Many of its members were unable or unwilling to continue engaging in firearms activity due to prohibition laws.

The city's first mayor was James Witherspoon and its first post office was established in 1870. In 1902, Smyrna added a new street name to its list of streets: Commerce Street. On July 1st of that year, Smyrna incorporated as a city under the state Constitution and adopted its own seal. In 1911-12, Smyrna erected two monumental granite obelisks on Church Street commemorating citizens who had given their lives for the Confederacy during World War I (including Colonel John Pemberton). That same year also saw the opening of one of America's most important libraries - Library Company Building #4 on Main Street - which served as home to both the City Clerk’s office and a large collection of local history materials until it closed in 1978 after being sold to Antioch College for use as an academic library while still considered part of Smyrna City Schools
Smyrna, Tennessee was founded in 1819 by David Smyrna and his wife Hannah. The Smyrnas were the first white family to settle in the area. They ran a small store on the town square until they moved to their current home in 1836. In 1850, Smyrna became a village and was incorporated as a city in 1865. Smyrna experienced significant growth during World War II with its production of munitions and other war-related materials. After the war, Smyrna began to shrink as its population declined and business declined. In 2007, Smyrna was merged with neighboring towns of Addison and Decatur to form the new city of Decatur-Smyrnan.
