In 1914, architect Edward Humes designed a new courthouse which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1838; it also served as library and mental hospital until 1975 when it was closed due to budget cuts conducted by then-Governor Phil Bredesen (D) who condemned its condition as being "unsightly" (). The building reopened in 2006 as the offices of Decatur County government before being donated to the Decatur County Historical Society in 2012 where it currently stands vacant awaiting restoration or collection into use as a museum once again within Decatur County history!

Smyrna, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Smyrna is the namesake of Smyrna, Texas. The town was founded on November 3, 1851 by James W. Smyth and his wife Eliza Jane Smith as a result of the Battle of Fort Donelson in which General Andrew Johnson's army nearly lost its entire command to Major General John Bell Hood's troops. The Smyths had petitioned for land to be set aside for a community and were given 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of what is now Main Street and an acre (1 ha) of land for schools and other purposes. The first settler in Smyrna was John Sheppard who arrived in 1853 from Farmington, Kentucky with his family. He built a log cabin on the east side of Main Street. In 1861 he sold his home and property to A H Watkins who organized the First Baptist Church in Smyrna and moved it two miles (3 km) down Main to what is now First Baptist Church Road. In 1865 Isaac Griggs bought Watkins' house and became one of the most important early settlers in Smyrna with over 50 acres (2 ha). By 1870 there were 100 residents living in Smyrna with 5 stores, 10 barns, 4 Masonic lodges and 2 churches – all part of an effort to build up trade around Central Tennessee by developing mines or lumbering operations along I-24W that would provide transportation throughout the region for goods brought by rail into Chattanooga or Milledgeville or Nashville. After years of growth within local boundaries but without any major industrial development taking place outside the town limits things changed when Sam Rayburn Sr., Governor designate during Reconstruction established downtown Chattanooga as "the business district" around which all new businesses must establish themselves if they want to continue doing business within Chattanooga limits; this provided incentives for companies like McCormick & Hawley meatpacking plants located just southwest of downtown on Murphree Street to open up their production facilities northward into Chattanoogan County while also stimulating some local construction projects such as Gastonia's new courthouse which started life as a tiny frame building on one endaved lot near Gastonia High School before growing into its current $60 million structure over several blocks between Fifth Avenue South and Court Avenue North
