Smyrna's first name comes from an ancient city in Turkey named Myrina and its current name honors General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel John Sevier Smyth. The community has been around since 1810 when vote casting began for what would become Cooke County. At that time, it was a part of Henderson County and had a post office called "Myrnia". In 1827, Smyrna became part of Davidson County when it was separated from Henderson County. The town dates its beginning to 1814 when Major General Andrew Jackson moved his family from Tennessee to new land in this area which he purchased from the head of one branch of the Campbell clan where they held title to a tract including present-day Smyrna Township and many other nearby townships including Fenton, Pikeville and Lebanon. Jackson donated land for this community so that white settlers could settle and trade with Native Americans who lived among them on their lands near present day Nashville. The first house built in Smyrna was erected by Captain James Caldwell upon donation by General Andrew Jackson himself on November 12, 1814; within two years, Caldwell had built four more homes – all still standing today – as well as two stores and a Post Office building which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 40/25 Business Loop corridor just outside of downtown Smyrna! Smyrna grew rapidly due to its location on the railroad and its access to education and industry. The population reached 1,500 by 1907, but declined to 500 by 1920 because of World War I and the depression. However, the town experienced a resurgence during the 1930s due to heavy agriculture and industrial growth in nearby Chattanooga. The population increased again after World War II until it peaked at over 10,000 in 1960 before declining again due to an increasing number of residents outside of Smyrna.
