Smyrna, Tennessee is located in the state of Tennessee. The population was 11,531 at the 2010 census. Smyrna is a small town located in Hardin County and is part of the Chattanooga–Middletown, TN-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Smyrna was once an agricultural community with numerous farms and small businesses. Today, Smyrna is home to a number of popular tourist destinations including the USS Constitution Museum and Park, as well as several shopping malls and restaurants. The history of Smyrna goes back to 1813 when General James Hogg founded the village of Easton on the banks of the Holston River. In 1819, Hogg designated Smyrna as the seat of Hardin County after he moved his headquarters from Easton. In 1821, John Sevier founded what would become known as Nashville because he thought it would be more advantageous for him to have one center in which people could trade goods with each other. A courthouse and jail were built in 1825 and 1830 respectively within town limits; both structures still stand today albeit slightly changed. In 1836, Hardin County became Knox County effective July 1st following a vote by its residents over objections from Lamar county residents who felt they should have been given a share in achieving this change. By 1840, however, many farmers in Knox County had turned their attention to growing cotton instead of farming so much land as had been done before; consequently, Easton continued to serve as the seat until it again became Smyrna during Reconstruction period (1868-1875). During World War II (1939-1945), Smyrna played an important role providing munitions for both Allied forces and Axis forces during World War II; its population totaled around 20% of all citizens served within government or military organizations based in or related to SmyrNA during those years aside from veterans who returned home afterwards.
