The History of Smyrna Smyrna first became known as a settlement after it was chosen as the site for an Episcopal church in 1831. The congregation took possession of land near present-day downtown Smyrna in 1832 and began construction on their church building. The congregation's first pastor, Rev. James Hays, served from 1833 to 1840. In 1836, Smyrana had a population of about 20 people and numerous mercantile activities were conducted by merchants such as Wm Broughton & Co., Jno Aiken & Bros., Samuel Gossage & Sons (later renamed Gossage), Robert Saunders & Bros., Geo Van Meter, Abel Pogue & Son (later renamed Saunders) and Ebenezer Boothroyd & Sons (later named Boothroyd). By 1840, however, cotton prices had plummeted so much that many merchants closed their businesses or converted to other pursuits. In 1841, Bishop John McMurtry arrived in Nashville to lead an episcopal visit to Marshall County and selected Smyrna as his residence for two weeks before traveling southward to Kingston Hills plantation near Pulaski on the Arkansas River where he met President James Kenedy Sr.. McMurtry visited again in early October1841 before departing for Memphis via steamboat for his return trip northward on November 3rd which completed his tour of Middle America including Tennessee On November 10th at 4 p.m., McMurtry delivered his sermon at First Presbyterian Church located northeast corner Market Street across from what is now White House Square just outside modern day downtown SmyrNA After giving thanks for having been given such an opportunity to preach within sight of Duck Commander headquarters adjacent Greensboro ARKANSAS RIVERBOAT TOURNAMENT STADIUM MCMURTRY DELIVERED SERMON AT WHITE HOUSE SQUARE ON NOVEMBER 10TH 1861 AGAINST THE DRESS OF MR DUCK COMPANY HEADQUARTERS IN GREENSBORO
The Smyrna area was first settled by the Fulcrum family in 1790. The Smyrna village, built on the present-day site of downtown Smyrna, was founded by Captain John Fulcrum in 1792. The town grew rapidly, and in 1803 it became a part of the Tennessee Territory. In 1816, Smyrna became an independent county within the newly created state of Tennessee. In 1907, Smyrna residents passing through their town on their way to or from work discovered what they thought were buried remains of Confederate soldiers hidden under a pile of leaves at the edge of town square. Initial investigations revealed that these were only recent construction parts used for cover during archaeological excavations being conducted nearby; however, public interest in this story led to additional excavation and discovery throughout 1909 and 1910 which ultimately uncovered over 1,500 artifacts including cannons, battle flags, uniforms and other military hardware dating back to the antebellum period. Today, Smyrna is home to several shopping malls as well as several businesses and cultural institutions such as First Baptist Church (founded in 1903), Symphony Hall (opened in 1912), Antioch University Middle Tennessee School (established in 1914), and The Greek Theatre (opened in 1926).
