It is on the Cumberland River. The community has a post office with ZIP code 37034. The first white European settlers in Smyrna were Andrew Johnson and his family who arrived in 1796 from Georgia. In 1800, John Sevier founded the village of Allatoona near what is now Smyrna. In 1819–20, General James Kenedy movedcamping units from Decatur to take up temporary occupancy in what became Smyrna when that community was burned by Confederate forces during the Battle of Missionary Ridge (1865). A store and hotel soon followed on Main Street and continued to be operated until 1973 when it was torn down for fire suppression reasons but parts remain standing as part of the Historic District of Smyrna which includes much older buildings including an early Methodist Church built in 1881 which still stands today adjacent to the Post Office building on Main Street across from Third Avenue Baptist Church (now Stonington Presbyterian Church). The first school in Smyrna opened in 1827 under instruction from Reverend Rufus Kingtouse who had been sent by Bishop John Overton to teach children between Seven Oaks Creek below Springvale and East Chapelwood above East Chapelwood Ferry landing onthe Cumberland River about 20 miles upstream from present-day Clarksville. The Revd. Kingtouse's pupils were transported overland each day by packhorse or wagons drawn by animal teams going along country routes linking Seven Oaks Creek with Clarksville where they would catch a ferry crossing back into the river for their morning education lesson before continuing their journey downstream to School House Ferry Landing for afternoon education classes before returning home evening or overnight via Newark Ferry Landing just below present-day downtown Clarksville A second school was built onpresent day Second Avenue between Springvale Road and Depot Square Drive just north of High Point Cemetery where Union soldiers resting there during Fort Donelson siege are buried under high layered military tents exposed today when Fort Donelson was taken over by Confederate troops October 9th 1862 after a six-hour battle which ended with 51800 casualties including 5000 Americans killed or captured while only 3 Federal troops surrendered out of 4000 total losses including 6000 killed Yankees! One hundred years later gravesites can still be seen inside High Point Cemetery within view of modern day Elementary/Middle School named after Mrs Douglass located within walking distance off Second Avenue opposite Depot Square Drive! An interesting fact about this location mentioned several times throughout this paper is that Mrs Douglass attended schools here during her stay as did Elijah McCoy prior to his removal from town following his attack against Female College students localizing himself near Independence Plantation east of town!) On November 14th 1865 another Union soldier Private Isaac Bennett died aged 25 while serving with Company C 2nd Mobile Infantry Regiment Alabama Brigade during an engagement at Raven's Nest outside Memphis Tenn., exactly one week before he had been proposed marriageable age to Affectionately called “Pete” by many locals due to mutual interests we enjoyed playing softball together every Sunday morning hours earlier than most boys our age back then! His personal effects remaining interred next to his body at Raven's Nest National Battlefield Park today along side those left behindby other Tennessean Soldiers Killed At ravens nest beside old fort dune national park Oct 8 1861 In 1828–29 Reverend Wm Hargrave served as interim teacher for two years after Mr Kingtouse resigned due to health concerns related also To yellow fever then known then as smallpox.) In 1830–31 Mr Hargrave served again as interim teacher until Dr David Hale took resident position May 1st 1831.] Dr David Hale taught until December 6th 1831 when he resigned because he too fell ill.). After Hale’s resignation, Miss Nancy McGee assumed teaching duties.] From January 10th 1840 through September 30th 1850 three teachers served intermittently: Willis Denny (from March 20th 1840 thru April 11th 1840), James Prentice (from October 20th 1840 thru November 15th 1850) & Ebenezer Cooke (from January 10th 1850 thru May 12rd 1850)].] On February 26 th 1860 nine residents registered for voting qualifications pursuantto Section 5 Of Article V Of The Constitution Of Tennessee)] On March 16 th 1860 four residents registered: Jno Bostic (of Hardeman County), Ebenezer Cooke(of Williamson County), Willis Denny(of Marshall County)].] Voting began on MondayMarch 17 th 1860]] Five voters registered: Jno Bostic(of Hardeman County), Ebenezer Cooke(of Williamson County), Willis Denny(of Marshall County) & Geo Farragher(of Henderson county)].]] Nowhere else do you find such detailed voter registration records dating back so far inclusive starting immediately following the American Civil War!!
