Shelbyville is a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. Shelbyville is located on the banks of the Cumberland River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification "Cfa"). Founded in 1836 as a small community on what is now called Post Road, it grew rapidly during the early 19th century as an agricultural center due to its location on one of the major trade routes between Nashville and Memphis. In 1875, post office officials decided that two name changes were necessary – from Post Road to Main Street because main street ran through both cities – and renamed the town after General Andrew Jackson's assassination. Shelbyville experienced significant growth following World War II; by 1950 it had become one of Tennessee's largest cities with over 200,000 residents. However, economic decline took hold in the 1980s and 1990s and led to significant social unrest which eventually led to bankruptcy for many businesses in downtown Shelbyville. A $10 million bond issue was approved by voters in 2007 which will help finance some redevelopment projects such as new housing or retail development along Main Street and other areas of downtown since these are expected to create new jobs statewide while also improving air quality and attracting more visitors to local businesses throughout town. Today, Shelbyville remains an economically strong city with strong ties to its rural surroundings; however, there are plans underway for some much-needed modernization including Better Business Bureau certified parking meters along Main Street so that citizens can easily pay for parking without having to go into downtown where prices are often prohibitively high (currently rates range from $6-12 per hour).
