Shelbyville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by Neely B. Shelby and his wife Julia Aiken Shelby as a post office on the Cumberland Plateau. The name comes from John Sevier's phrase "The valley of the coals," which refers to how easily coal could be found near the town. The first store open in Shelbyville was called "The Foundry." In 1885, a school was built and named for Mrs. Shelby (1847-1920). In 1895, a new courthouse and jail were built in downtown Shelbyville; these buildings remain standing today. In 1902, an electric light company was organized and began service in downtown Shelbyville with two poles driven into the ground by Mr. Shelby fronting Main Street east of First Avenue (). Electricity became available to all citizens of Hardin County through leased lines from Nashville Hydroelectric Power Company beginning on October 1, 1907; this company continued services until its merger with Tennessee Central Railway on May 15, 1925. On November 6th 1906 Drilling efforts began along what would become known as Diamond Fork Creek within present day Harrisonburg Township but failed due to low water levels caused by heavy rains that year - just days before construction began on what would become one of America’s largest hydroelectric projects ever – Hoover Dam! Prior to dam completion in January 1913 much discussion took place about whether or not to name the interlocking dams after General Robert E Lee (1865-1944) – although ultimately it wasn’t decided due to public objections! At $5 million dollars per unit (equivalent to $127 million today), Hoover Dam ranks as one of America’s most expensive engineering feats ever completed! Today parts of both dams still stand including portions close enough for exploration! One interesting note about early history is that even though it has been over 100 years since people lived near where Diamond Fork Creek now lies – numerous artifacts have been found throughout those years such as pioneer boots and saddles still being used today! Since World War II there has been large scale development taking place in Downtown Shelbyville with major businesses like FedEx®, Nissan North America*, Ford Motorsports* & more opening up shop across from downtown hotels like Marriott® Rewards™ Hotel & Casino., making Downtown another busy destination for business travelers looking for convenient access to shopping centers and dining options alike!. The village of Shelbyville was founded on May 17, 1815 by John Sevier and his family after they left Morristown for Shelbyville to be closer to their plantations. Sevier named the village after himself and his brother-in-law James Robertson. In 1830, the village had a population of 350 people; it grew gradually until it reached 1,000 in 1840 when it became an incorporated town. The first mayor was Elijah Ballou. The growth of Shelbyville was due to its location on the Cumberland River which made it easy to transport goods and passengers between Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee. The river also allowed for development of mills that produced cotton clothing and other products such as flour and tobacco. By 1860, the total number of businesses in Shelbyville had increased to twenty-one with a payroll of $236,000. The growth continued through the Civil War until 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all towns in eastern Tennessee within five miles (8 km) of Union lines closed without regard to whether they wereUnion or Confederate controlled

The first post office in Shelbyville was established in 1805. The town became a consolidated municipality on February 14, 1907. On December 12, 1913, the United States Congress passed an act creating the United States Post Office Department and authorizing the construction of post offices throughout the country. The first post office in Shelbyville opened on February 14, 1914.
