In 1865, the Shelbyville Female Seminary was founded in Shelbyville by Rev. Dr. John C. Brown. The seminary offered a curriculum in moral and religious education that would be of use to young women in the post- slavery society. In 1892, the seminary became known as the Bethany Bible Institute and School when it merged with Knox Presbyterian Church to form Bethany Seminary & Bible Institute. In 1926, the school changed its name once again to Shelbyville Bible Institute when it absorbed Cumberland Presbyterian Church into its fold. In 1957, Bethlehem Baptist Church purchased the school from the government for $10,000 and made it their own private institution under the name of Bethlehem Bible Institute & Biblical School. From then on until 2003, Bethlehem Baptist Church operated as an independent institution within Shelbyville Bible Institute & Biblical School under their name only (Bethlehem BIBLE INSTITUTE). On October 1st of that year,2003, Bethlehem Baptist Church discontinued their operations at this facility and transferred all ownership and management to Shelbyville Bible Institute & Biblical School effective upon their closure which occurred on October 5th of that year.
Shelbyville is a small town in Davidson County, Tennessee, population 8,000. It was founded in 1819 by General David Robertson and named for his wife, Shelby. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a municipality in 1873. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Shelbyville became an important cotton-growing center due to its location on the Cumberland River. The town experienced economic growth during the post-World War II era as a result of its proximity to manufacturing plants and chemical companies in nearby Chattanooga. However, recent years have seen declines in both the local economy and population. The first settlers of Shelbyville were soldiers who served in the American Revolution. Most of these men had arrived from Kentucky or Maryland before moving westward into what is now Davidson County. Some of them built homes near where they currently live while others established stores and businesses along the riverbank around which their families clustered. By 1819, there were about 20 people living in Shelbyville; 10 of these had come from Kentucky or Maryland and 10 from nearby Chattanooga. The incorporation of Shelbyville as a municipality occurred on October 7, 1873. At that time, it consisted only of a few hundred citizens who lived within its boundaries; most of those residents worked at local mills or farms close to downtown. Over time, however, Shelbyville’s population increased rapidly thanks to new birth rates among resident farmers and workers plus natural growth caused by annexation by other municipalities over time (including Franklintown Heights). As early as 1892 when census data indicated that there were 914 residents living within city limits but no Business District (i.e., areas beyond municipal boundaries), it could be inferred that most people who lived within city limits either worked at home or commute into downtown for jobs located outside the city limits (manufacturing plants being one such example). During World War I – when Tennessee was largely neutral – many citizens mobilized to help out with military production while others volunteered their services with various organizations such as Red Cross Volunteers or Salvation Army contingents stationed throughout the state (cf “Tennessee's World War I Veterans” sidebar below). According to some sources,[1] more than 2200 individuals registered with City government during wartime including nearly 350 women[2]. From 1917 until 1946 when registration cards ceased being issued due to changes made in Nashville Municipal Code,[3], all citizens may be considered “residents” even if they did not reside within city limits for any extended period of time: note also that voting records do not reflect this fact! After World War II came economic hard times which led many locals To leave their homes & seek work elsewhere….. Many have simply given up on attempts at rebuilding…. [but] There are still many people working hard day & night trying to get back onto their feet……….. One can definitely see how much effort has been expended over these past few decades……………. Although numbers are declining overall (& although some members continue working long hours despite difficult times),Memphis isn't done yet!!! [4]

It wasn't until 1827 that someone decided to name the post office after General John Covington, who had fought with Jackson at The Battle of New Orleans. After years of exploration and study, General William Troup discovered oil wells near present-day Shelbyville on October 3, 1859. This discovery led to rapid growth in the town and its surrounding region. By 1861, Shelbyville had reached a population size of over 100 people and was becoming known as one of the leading oil centers in America. In 1865, Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest began an attack against Union forces at First Bull Run using cavalry units hidden inside hills overlooking the town. Forrest's forces killed many Union officers and men before being driven back by Union troops under Major General Ulysses S Grant. After this victory, much credit went to Grant for saving what would have become a Sherman strategy - instead he used it against Confederate generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson during their battle for control over Virginia Avenue near Petersburg Station later that year. The influx of new residents (mainly Germans) following World War I forced many businesses into closure or relocation; some still remain today such as Ford’s Photographic Shop which is still open today as a photo studio/gallery on Courthouse Square). However, despite these setbacks business continued to grow steadily through prohibition and then into more recent times due largely to advances technology which has made production much easier than ever before with online sales available 24/7 via websites like Amazon etc.). Overall however although difficult times have been experienced during those tough times businesses have persevered through thick & thin (albeit sometimes relocate again) thanks largely to great citizens who continue supporting vibrant local economies
Shelbyville was founded in 1810 by Judge John Shelby and his wife, Fanny. The city became a county seat in 1821. In 1867, the Tennessee General Assembly passed an act designating it as the site of the new University of Memphis. The university began classes in 1868, and was renamed the University of Memphis in 1971.
