Shelbyville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County and home to the Shelbyville Civic Center. The main thoroughfare through town is Elm Street. It was founded in 1810 by General John Sevier as an agricultural village on the Hiwassee River northwest of Memphis. In 1830, it became part of the new state of Tennessee when it was created from parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. When Union troops burned Memphis in 1863, Shelbyville quickly became one of the most important cities in reconstruction south of Nashville. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, cotton production declined and Shelbyville lost its status as a major center of commerce and culture; however, it has regained some prosperity through manufacturing (especially textiles) and tourism since 2000. The first post office operated in Shelbyville on February 8, 1814; it was renamed for General Andrew Jackson on May 12th that year after he became president. The present building was erected on Main Street between Prospect Avenue and Elm Street in 1868-69 by the then-newly formed USDA Agricultural Experiment Station (later renamed USDA Forest Service). Today's civic center opened on October 4th, 1924 with general services originally comprising just a meeting room inside an old brick courthouse across from what is now Goodson Park Elementary School; today's complex includes a variety of buildings including a theater/theater hall/theater annex/ballroom/conference center/multi-purpose training area/, three shopping malls (one each within two miles of downtown), fouranger restaurant complexes totaling over 200 restaurants/, nine golf courses (), seven water parks (), three casinos (), two ice cream parlors ()/, five health clubs (), four bowling alleys (). In recent years significant efforts have been made to revitalize downtown while preserving historical resources such as preserved churches and homes dating back to before the region's early settlement by white settlers. This has included extensive renovations to various historic buildings including: Main Street Theater (opened November 15th 2009), Courthouse Annex (opened January 6th 2010), Goodson Park Elementary School (opened September 1st 2009), USDA Agricultural Experiment Station Building (opened December 10th 2006), Second Presbyterian Church Complex (opened October 25th 2006) - all which are now open for business again following extensive renovation/. Shelbyville, Tennessee is a city in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 16,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. The first settler in what would become Shelbyville was William Allen who built a cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1824. By 1830, there were six families living and working in what became Shelbyville. The first school was established on the corner of Third and Market Streets in 1831 by Reverend John Jinks with nine students. In 1836, James Henton donated three acres (1 hectare) to be used as a public square for the town of Shelbyville. In 1865, General John Custer's final battle occurred near present day Shelbyville when he and his troops fought against Lt. Colonel Richard Taylor's cavalry brigade under General Ulysses S Grant at Little Big Horn Creek Bridge over the Arkansas River northeast of town. Aftermath of that battle forced many Native American residents from their homes around town and it also helped spur development within that area for future businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Belk department store which opened their doors in 1870-71 During its early years, Memphis had been more important to local commerce than anything else so small towns like Shelbyville thrived because they could supply goods made outside Memphis with prices that wouldn't be possible locally. This natural trade relationship continued until after World War II when Interstate 40 came through town which effectively killed off much of the local manufacturing industry .
