Shelbyville is a small town in Franklin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville was founded in 1837 by surveyors working for the Union Pacific Railroad. The first post office opened in 1838, and the town was named after General James Shelby, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a Brigadier General with Sherman's army during the American Civil War. The first school in Shelbyville was built on land donated by John Witherspoon and others in 1838. In 1865, it became part of Davidson County when it was created from parts of Knox and Hardin counties. The first store was established near present day downtown Shelbyville on July 2, 1839 by Cader Crouch and his wife Nancy Auld. The pioneer farmers of this area raised corn, hay, oats, tobacco and other crops until about 1860 when railroads came to bear down heavily upon agricultural pursuits. By 1870 most of what is now downtown Shelbyville had been built up around the original courthouse square (now Third Street). In 1905 local farmer JB Goodyear started marketing produce called "Goode's Farm Bureau." When he began shipping his product to cities such as Memphis through wagon trains following roads then unnumbered today (Upper Cumberland Road), he increased traffic through Shelbyville so much that Streetsboro Township renamed itself "ShelbyVILLE" after him to avoid confusion with Goode's Farm Bureau stores located elsewhere within their township boundaries! Downtown development did not take off until World War II when large numbers of soldiers moved into town during World War II because there were no other places to live without fear of combat or supporting troops returning home without leave or finding inadequate housing available once they got back home! By 1945 all but one block east of Court Street were developed as single-family homes while most blocks west remained rural farmland! Today many businesses remain open serving local cuisine including several churches which have also become cultural attractions providing educational opportunities for students inside/outside their doors!
