Shelbyville is a small town located in Shelby County, Tennessee. The population was 4,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The name "Shelbyville" was first given to this village by General John Sevier when he founded the military post known as Fort Shelby in 1796. In 1814, Colonel Isaac Shelby purchased 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land and named it "Henderson." After Henderson's death in 1819, his heirs donated another 1,500 acres (500 hectares) to the community without any clear intent or plan for its use. The present-day town of Shelbyville was organized on October 15, 1860 when a group of local citizens petitioned the state legislature to create a new township within their existing county. On December 10 of that year they met again with commissioners from Henderson and other nearby townships to form what would eventually become Shelbyville Township. The first courthouse in what would become Shelbyville was built on West Main Street in 1865; it served as the seat for court proceedings until 1898 when a new courthouse was constructed on State Route 79 south of town. As one component of Chattanooga MSA, downtown Memphis experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to waves of immigrants - many from Scandinavian countries - who arrived seeking work and opportunity in the industrial city then growing near them. Many residents originally hailed from rural areas near Clarksdale and Decatur; however, throughout most of Tennessee these newcomers gradually replaced older white residents as majorities within newly formed communities like Shelbyville and Chattanooga. With few exceptions among working-class men who lost their jobs during World War I or II or men who left for economic reasons after 1919 – such as veterans returning home following World War I – race played an increasingly important role in social life hereabouts throughout those decades. Today's largely African American population has grown heavily since Jim Crow segregation ended statewide racial discrimination here some 45 years ago; nonetheless many white longtime residents remain active politically and contribute financially to various charities and organizations related to their color rather than identify themselves exclusively with one race or ethnicity. One result has been an overall loss of diversity within this traditionally diverse community despite efforts by some elected officials over recent years towards reconciliation through public education about both its history and potential future .

Shelbyville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Hardin County and the second-smallest community in Tennessee. The name of Shelbyville comes from a post office on the Cumberland River named for General Andrew Jackson. The first communities in what is now Hardin County were located around present-day Shelbyville and Poston. In 1825, Colonel John Silliman founded a small village called Brownsboro on his land north of present day Shelbyville. Brownsboro grew rapidly due to its location and became known as one of the most important trade centers in eastern Tennessee during the early 19th century. In 1829, Colonel James Fenton founded another small village near present day Clarksville which he named Forney after himself. Forney grew quickly due to its position on the main road between Nashville and Knoxville and soon became an important trading center along with Brownsboro and Forney
Shelbyville was founded on December 12, 1819 by John Shelby and his wife Rachel. The town was named for General Robert E. Lee and was located in the then-unincorporated area of Sevier County. In 1845, the Tennessee Legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a courthouse in Shelbyville. The building, which opened in 1846, became home to the state judiciary until it moved to Nashville in 1971.
