The history of handguns in Shelbyville, Tennessee goes back to the early days of the city. The first handgun laws were passed by the Shelby County government in 1876. These laws regulated the ownership and use of handguns within the county. In 1907, the state of Tennessee passed its own handgun law which was much more stringent than anything that had been passed before. This law regulated the ownership and use of handguns within Tennessee as well as prohibiting them from being sold or possessed without a license. In 1938, a new handgun ordinance was passed by Shelbyville City Council. This ordinance prohibited all handguns from being owned or used within the city limits. It also provided for a $100 fine for anyone who violated this ordinance. In 1961, an amendment to the City Council’s handgun ordinance was made which allowed for concealed carry of rifles and shotguns on city property subject to certain restrictions. These restrictions included a prohibition on using these weapons at night or in areas where there are no blind spots. On July 1, 1998, Shelbyville City Council amended their handgun ordinance once again adding provisions regulating ammunition sales and possession (specifically limiting magazine size to 10 rounds). The amendment also introduced new security measures including metal detectors at gun retailers and Requiring individuals presenting an Identification card with proof of residency to purchase ammunition
Shelbyville, Tennessee is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 census and 4,048 as of the 2016 census. It is part of the Memphis- Nashville-Tullahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville is known for its culture, history, and natural resources. The community was founded in 1892 by John Denton and his wife Lula Dunn Denton on a tract of land that he had purchased from Colonel Jameson (1801-1870). The name "Shelbyville" first appeared on deeds dated October 1, 1892 from Fayette County to Mrs. Lula Dunn Denton and Mr. John Denton for $1,500/acre/year then current stream area near present day Interstate 65 & US 71A). The original settlers were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who had come to this area to try to bring Christianity to Native Americans who still lived thereabouts during what was known as the 'contact period'. They were Leadbetter Brothers (1862-1929) with their son Jim Leadbetter (1927-2009) who led excavations at nearby Mount Pleasant Cemetery which yielded evidence that early human habitation in this neck ofthe woods began about 12000 years ago! In keeping with these missionary intentions some orchard trees were cut down during erection because it would have been prohibitively expensive to replant them after such an extensive vandalism spree; also removed entire cedar stands within several miles radius due also to environmental concerns about relocating large tree saplings into environmentally hostile locations! As a result of all this activity many fragments now extant remain including both Hartsfield Street Jail built around 1830s (now home of local high school), Community House building erected circa 1910 which served as Meeting Place for Presbyterians until 1943 when it was replaced by Union Presbyterian Church & First United Methodist Church before being razed in 1974; Second Baptist Chapel which functioned either as Schoolhouse or Cemetery from 1865 until its conversion into a home in 1978; Third Baptist Chapel which served primarily as Storehouse until 1886 when it burned; Fourth Baptist Chapel lasted only one year before being destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1886 while services were taking place inside; Depot Hotel built on Main Street in 1907 became famous nationally for having been featured prominently in MGM's western feature film "The Great Train Robbery" opposite Douglas Fairbanks Sr.; original Post Office building now occupied by convenience store attached thereto date back to 1906 when railroad crossed through town center just east off I‑65 southbound near Byers Ferry Bridge; later owner changed name to Shelbyville Supermarket but closed 1993 In recent decades much has happened within Shelbyville limits especially within its borders directly attributable either directly or indirectly to two things: One - World War II saw an influx of soldiers returning home via rail following activation along international boundaries resulting in increased trade betweenMemphis and KnoxvillenoTennessee resultant growth opportunities for businesses like Ford Motorsports LLC situated across I‑65 northbound approximately three miles westside then east side just past current day Texaco gas station prior thereto becoming operational called Park Service Garage prior thereto renamed back again upon reopening as Ford dealership adjacent thereto /two more examples - Riverwalk development adjacent old quarrysite site providing job training/employment opportunities numerous restaurantsauxiliary services Greenberg’s Grocery reopened immediately adjacent new hospital opened Spring 2011 vacated by previous operator Market Garden Eatery closed early 2012 leaving vacant lot next door Little Italy restaurant opened September 2nd2012 filling that space vacated by market garden eatery formerly owned by jimmy johnson family subsequent owners include danielle elliot mother daughter team samantha elliot mother son joe matthews trucker brothers david cooley barney brown commercial fisherman
