Shelbyville is a town in Jefferson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Shelbyville was founded in 1825 by John Shelby and his family as a Studebaker town. The first post office was established in 1827 and the first store was opened in 1830. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size on May 1, 1900. In 1907, the name of the town was changed from Shelbyville to Murfreesboro after Confederate General Forrest's battle victory at Murfreesboro Heights over Union forces. The community that would become Shelbyville developed around a small trading post called White Oak Station which began operating in 1819 on what is now State Route 601 about three miles east of today's intersection of State Route 421 and Old Highway 153B. By 1825, John Shelby had founded what would become known as Shelbyville as an agricultural center with extensive plantations south of present-day downtown When he died in 1829 his estate passed to his son Daniel who operated it until his death in 1850 when it reverted back to John's widow Martha who leased it from her brother Amos Gray for five years starting in 1856 before selling it again to Andrew Jackson Davis Sr., a slaveholder and politician turned businessman For most of its history prior to becoming an incorporated community located withinJefferson County only four white men were residents of what became known as "Hillsborough" including two members of Mr. Davis' family one blacksmiths helperand one shoemaker while ninetyeight percent or more African Americans lived off farms owned by their white owners working primarily tenant labor or sharecropping while attend school during weekdays and served dinner at night They did this despite being taxed twice per year by General Assembly which denied them basic political rights such as voting representation without taking into consideration race
Shelbyville was founded in 1801 by General David Wilkinson. The town was named for Captain Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1825, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1975.
