This order became known as the Mayflower Compact. The war ended with Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendering at Appomattox Court House in 1865, leading to what is commonly called Reconstruction in America. Under this new system, African American citizens were given voting rights and access to education and other basic social services; however, gun ownership remained illegal for most white people. In 1970, Gun Control Act was established as one of Nixon’s major domestically successful policies that aimed to reduce crime rates by outlawing certain firearms including handguns
Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Shelby County. The town was established in 1814 as a result of the Santa Fe Trail and became an important commercial center during the 19th century. In 1896, it became part of Memphis when that city was founded. The arrival of white settlers in what is now Shelbyville began with three groups led by Andrew Jackson: James Robertson and his brothers-in-law David Fenton and John Sevier; and Isaac Rossiter. They met on July 4, 1814 to decide where to locate their new settlement after completing the Santa Fe Trail from Texas to New Mexico. After discussing plans for weeks they decided on a site between Clarksville (now Greeneville) and Tellico Creek because this area had more potential for agriculture than other areas around them. In 1815, General William Troup arrived with 5 companies of Ulysses S. Grant's army west of Nashville to help settle what would become Shelby County. On October 15, 1815, General Troup ordered Captain Elijah Blackburn to build a road from Nashville to Clarksville so that goods could be transported easily between these two cities and also provide access for early settlers who were still arriving in large numbers from Kentucky and Virginia. Robertson built the first house in Shelbyville on December 12, 1815 just outside the present day limits of town limits; he named it "Moses". Over time many other families followed him into this fledgling community which quickly grew into one of centrality in southern Tennessee due to its location on Highway 61 connecting Nashville with Memphis across twelve miles (19 km). By 1850 there were over 100 people living in Shelbyville including 30 lawyers practicing law within city limits alone! A post office was established at Shelbyvillette on February 14, 1830 under First Lieutenant John Witherspoon; it remained operational until 1865 when it was replaced by an omnibus depot built near present day First Baptist Church which served as the town's first courthouse until independence was granted fourteen years later! In 1907 Company C Confederate Veterans honored local hero Nathan Bedford Forrest by erecting a memorial garden honoring all military veterans from both sides during World War I along home plate at park located east side athletic field drive south of current downtown plaza
Founded in 1811, Shelbyville was the first town on the Cumberland Plateau. The area that is now Shelbyville was part of the Cherokee Nation until 1797 when it became part of Tennessee. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson who led the American Revolution and also served as President from 1827 to 1829.
