Shelbyville is located on the Cumberland River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of downtown Memphis and 20 miles (32 km) west of Nashville. According to the 2010 census, Shelbyville has a total area of , all land. The first settlers in what is now Shelbyville were slaves who worked for their owner's family in nearby Decatur Township. In 1825, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from David Wilkins for $4 Beaver Dam Creek Road (). Forrest named this tract "Fort Knox" because he thought it would make a strong fortress against possible attack by Cherokee Indians or other whites from Tennessee or Kentucky. In 1829, two years after Fort Knox was founded, Captain Richard Coke bought 636 acres (251 ha) along Beaver Dam Creek for $2 per acre ($0.72 per sq mi). This tract became known as Coke's Fork Bottom (), after Captains John Cooke and George Rogers Jr., who had explored this region in 1828-29 with Colonel Alexander Stroud and others on behalf of the United States government during the 1830s Anglo-American westward expansion into what would become Texas and Oklahoma Territory.
