In 1911, Drury Paper Company was founded by Homer Gates with help from his father-in-law A W Stephenson and continues to operate today as one of Tennessee's largest paper companies. Shelbyville is a small town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis–Ft. Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Shelbyville was John White in 1815. As general store and post office proprietor, White played an important role in early Shelbyville development. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River on the site of present-day downtown Shelbyville. In 1819 he became one of the promoters and organizers of what would become Knox County, Tennessee; he served as its first county clerk and justice of peace from 1821 to 1830. In 1865 Confederate General Joseph Easley surrendered at Fort Donelson near Clarksville after a three-month siege by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant; nearly all of Shelbyville's male citizens were taken prisoner or massacred during that campaign. Most residents returned home shortly afterward but some continued to reside in Knox County until it merged into UnionTennessee in 1870. The area around today's downtown Shelbyville was developed as farmland for slave labor during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; many homes still stand today despite being more than 100 years old. Many businesses located along Third Street – once lined with slaves' quarters and other associated structures – have since been replaced by residences or commercial buildings, leaving an interesting blend of antebellum architecture with modern facilities within walking distance for most people today. Shelbyville experienced significant growth beginning around World War II when production base moved from Chattanooga to nearby Beech Grove Village due to wartime needs such as armaments manufacturing and heavy ammo storage (later military housing). The influx of new people - especially African Americans - led to increased social tensions which often boiled over into violence until later generations brought more understanding and tolerance towards different groups throughout history (euphemistically called "integration").
