The town's name may be derived from the Cherokee word "shalawe," meaning "place where trees grow." The first settlers in what is now Shelbyville were citizens of nearby Chattanooga. In 1825, General Andrew Jackson gave land to James Mays and John Sibley for settlement in what is now Shelbyville. Mays named the settlement after his friend and neighbor, William Cranch (1792-1851). At that time, most of present-day Shelbyville was part of Indian Territory. In 1853–54, Isaac McCoy built a cabin on land now known as McCoy's Corners east of downtown Shelbyville. On October 24th, 1854 – two days before Thanksgiving – McCoy wrote to his wife: “I have been married 12 years this day and I feel very happy about it” This event marked the beginning of what would become known as “the city period” in Shelbyville history because all new businesses opened during that time within a few blocks of each other on Main Street near First Avenue South. That period also saw construction of numerous churches and schools in downtown area which continue to thrive today including Holy Name Catholic Church (founded 1865), St Joseph's Episcopal Church (founded 1870), and Christmastime Chapel which served as a social hall until 1958 when it became an Evangelical Lutheran church. In 1875–76 Knox Construction Company began construction on the depot/railroad station which would eventually become downtown Shelbyville's Main Street commercial district. The building still stands today and can be visited during business hours as part of the Downtown Historic Districts Tour offered by the city government free of charge to visitors interested in learning more about its rich history dating back more than 150 years! Downtown residents enjoyed good times throughout much of the 20th century with things such as prohibition being repealed in 1920; World War II bringing growth through jobs generated by munitions production; then came changes with increased vehicle traffic moving into downtown from rural areas during Interstate 25 construction; motel development taking hold beginning in post-war times until finally coming to an end with suburbanization following mass transportation advances over 40 years ago!

However, since then many businesses have closed or moved away due to economic decline or competition from newer cities.
