Shelbyville is located on the Cumberland Plateau and is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Shelbyville were farmers who arrived in 1807. They built their first cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson granted land to Robert Elam and James Fenton for farming purposes. A post office was established in Shelbyville in 1816, and a year later saw its first settler, John Workman. By 1830, there were over 50 dwellings and businesses in Shelbyville. In 1830, Elijah Hicks founded what became known as Hicks Furniture Store which became one of the largest furniture stores east of the Mississippi River. In 1840-1841, Revolt against slavery began in Tennessee and riots occurred throughout the state; however, by 1850 all slaves had been emancipated in Alabama or Freedmen's Bureau jurisdiction. In 1861 when Confederate forces invaded America during the American Civil War (the war to end slavery), Shelbyville voted to secede from Tennessee but was soon re-Unionized after Union soldiers burned down most of downtown Knox County during an attack on Fort Donelson on July 9th 1861. After that event many people from acrossTennessee migrated to Memphis to escape reprisals from Confederate forces following thisattack During Reconstruction (1865-1868) much activity took place within Shelbyville including several elections held for members of both houses of Congress as well as for Mayoralty events such as chorale concerts at First Baptist Church which served as fundraisers for reconstruction efforts . However most residents chose not to return following Reconstruction’s termination In 1920 construction began on what would become known as "The White House" which served as a social club and private home until it was sold off to developers in 1985 The current structure housing public school students occupies portions of this building dating back to 1882

Over time, various businesses have been established in Shelbyville, including a hospital, grocery store, library, and several amusement park attractions. Today, much of what once made up downtown Shelbyville has been replaced by new buildings or demolished completely due to development pressures from surrounding municipalities. However, some original millinery and fabric stores still remain as well as three churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1870), Second Baptist Church (founded in 1886), and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1906).
Shelbyville was founded in 1814 by the Shelby County surveyor, James B. Cullum. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who was then a U.S. Senator from Tennessee. The first post office in Shelbyville opened in 1816. In 1830, the town had a population of 50 people and it became a village in 1834. In 1860, the town had a population of 2,500 people and it became a city on December 15, 1865.
