Shelbyville is located in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The city was founded in 1837 by a group of investors led by General James Fenton. The first gunsmith in the area was John Hargrave, who built what is now the City Hall and two other buildings. In 1858 the town got its own post office. By 1870 it had a population of around 100 people and a school system with 12 schools. The US Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. On May 9, 1861 General Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry brigade rode into Shelbyville to demand goods from local merchants. Three storekeepers mounted their horses and fired shots at Forrest's horsemen as they passed through the town; this event is commonly known as the "Shelbyville Massacre". On November 3, 1862 Union troops burned all but one building in Shelbyville after discovering Confederate munitions stores there. The Union troops also looted some businesses before leaving for good on November 5th. In 1865 Shelbyville became part of Great Britain after the American Civil War ended; it has not been back to its pre-war status since then. In 1886 a gristmill was built near downtown that still operates today; it was used to grind corn for local farmers until 1975. In 1907 an sawmill was built on Green River east of town that still operates today; it produced woodchips and lumber until 1985 when it switched to aluminum production alone. In 1935 an armory and gunnery range were built within city limits; these remain operational today as the Shelbyvillette Armory & Gunnery Range Inc.; they are also home to local high school's shooting programs (9th-12th grades).
Shelbyville is a small town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The general store and post office are located in the center of town. The first settlers in Shelbyville were James Fenton and his wife Martha (née Green). They made their home on a tract of land that they purchased from John Sevier in 1798. In 1802, John Sevier donated 4 acres (1 km²) to the town for its first courthouse and jail. A Baptist church was built in 1810 on this site and served as the town's ecclesiastical center until 1865 when it was replaced by a new Presbyterian church building which still stands today. In 1830, Samuel Soddy bought 640 acres (250 ha) of forested land east of Shelbyville from David Barbour for $2,000 cash. He named it "Soddy Forest" after himself and his son-in-law Daniel Sevier Sr., who had earlier owned half of the land. With this purchase, Soddy became one of the early developers of what would become Shelbyville. A sawmill operated by Andrew Dickson began operations near present day downtown Shelbyville on July 26, 1833; it continued operation until about 1910 when it went out of business due to lack of demand for lumber from during World War I & II . A grist mill also operated briefly around this time but later closed down as well because there was no demand for flour anymore due to advances in technology . A post office called "Sidney" opened at this location on September 20, 1840; it was renamed "Shelbyville" on October 10 following an act of the General Assembly passed February 17th, 1841 . On October 16th 1870 residents voted 3-to-1 to annex into Knox County because they felt that Knox County would be more beneficial geographically with its larger population base and easier access to resources like water sources than neighboring counties such as Putnam County which they felt were not economically viable without annexation . However Knox County refused annexation offer so Sidney surrendered its incorporation status on December 2nd 1870 contesting with Putnam County over property values within their county limits

The town was founded on December 12, 1814, by Andrew Jackson and his family after they moved from Milledgeville, Georgia. The first settlers were all men: Andrew Jackson, James Hance, John Sharp and James Robertson. In 1819 the land that now makes up Shelbyville was given to Isaac Shelby by Samuel Swann Jr., one of Jackson's brothers-in-law. After serving as a captain in General Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), Isaac Shelby returned to England and started a cotton plantation there. When he died in 1851 his estate passed to his son-in-law George Willockt Sr.. In 1865 businessman Hiram Sullivant laid out what is today downtown Shelbyville on land donated by him for public use with money he had saved from selling slaves. At first Sullivant built only two houses - one on Market Street and one on US 131 - but soon began expanding into other industries including lumberjacking and real estate development. He organized what is now known as the "Old South" social club which helped promote southern hospitality around Nashville while also providing alcoholic drinks for its members before dances at night called "Broom Dance". From 1888 until 1957 much of downtown Shelbyville was occupied by Memphis National Military Park which included barracks used by both Confederate Army soldiers and Union Army troops during the American Civil War; post office; arsenal; parade ground; shelter house for officers' families; hospital; cookhouse/brake house; washhouse/mud room;fireplace/log room etc.; as well as mess hall and rifle range inside park boundaries A new shopping district developed along I-55 east of downtown Memphis which became known as "TheSouth Side." One of its early leaders was entrepreneur Sam Walton who bought several blocks of property in downtown Shelbyville between Dairy Queen Boulevard (now Lookout Road) and University Avenue in 1966 for $1 million dollars making it one of Tennessee's earliest suburbs . Walmart continues to be headquartered there with over 2 million employees globally . It has since created concentrations throughout central Tennessee including here in downtown — a full block away from Walmarts original headquarters— and parts of Germantown , Knoxvillle & Madison counties ..... Downtown — including SamWalmart's original headquarters—-has seen significant gentrification over time with some old buildings being turned into luxury apartments or retail spaces .... Many local businesses have closed or been relocated because competition from Walmart has made them uncompetitive .... However few people outside city limits really know about this history
Shelbyville is home to a large number of historical markers and ruins, most notably the Shelbyville Arsenal. The arsenal was built in 1827 and served as a munitions depot for the Union army during the Civil War. It also played an important role in later Confederate times, being used to produce artillery ammunition. The arsenal was destroyed by Union forces in 1865 and its remains are now buried beneath a shopping mall.
