Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The name was derived from the Cherokee word "Hlebawn", meaning "place where there is wood". The first settlers in Shelbyville were three families who arrived in 1799. By 1821, many more people had moved to Shelbyville from nearby Jackson and Tullahoma counties because of its fertile land and easy access to transportation. A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1827, and by 1830 had grown to include a store, schoolhouse, and two blacksmiths. In 1832–1834 General Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry invaded East Tennessee and burned much of the countyseat of Nashville; this destroyed the town's business district and threw most of its inhabitants into poverty. However, within six months most of the destruction had been repaired or replaced by new businesses and homes. In 1840 Samuel Morse sent his first electric telegraph cable through Shelbyville; it became one of America's first commercial towns during this time period When cotton prices crashed during the Civil War (1861-1865), some residents left for Union territory but many others chose to stay behind to rebuild following Sherman's march through TN on May 9-10 1865 . After Reconstruction ended in 1877 most residents returned home except for a few hundred who moved into what is now Memphis as refugees following another series of devastating floods that year followed by a drought which caused widespread crop failures across much of Appalachia . In 1907 developer Rufus Wainwright founded Greeneville Manufacturing Company withintent to create an industrial center near downtown Memphis . With World War I looming large early developers turned their attention towards war production rather than development; however when prohibition was reinstated after WWI , development recommenced with earnestness once again!
