Many residents moved out when Interstate 65 became available which made it easier for tourists to visit without having to go through Shelbyville. In 1925, the repeal of Prohibition led to an increase in job opportunities for local residents as well as development along I-65 making it easier for them to get work outside their homes. Some businesses closed but others survived until the late 2000s when they were taken over by online retailers such as Walmart and Sears which has had a negative impact on traditional brick-and-mortar stores throughout the community .
