In 1861, Confederate forces moved from Chattanooga to Shelbyville in order to support General Robert E. Lee's army during the Civil War. When the Union army captured Shelbyville on April 12, 1865, it became a Union garrison town. After the war ended, many people left Shelbyville for various reasons. Some stayed while others left after they were requisitioned by the United States Army for service in Reconstruction Era southern states. In 1931, Ford Motor Company began manufacture in Shelbyville and created a major industry that helped drive local economic growth throughout much of Tennessee until World War II interrupted that progress.
Shelbyville is a small town in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is the county seat of Shelby County. The community has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) and lies within the East Tennessee Valley Authority coal mining district. Shelbyville was founded by English colonists in 1796 as Station Inn on the present-day site of downtown Shelbyville. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson ordered all white males over the age of 20 to leave for lack of job opportunities in central Tennessee because he felt that black people were taking advantage of white settlers. A group of 300 British Loyalists who had sided with Jackson moved into Shelbyville and started a grocery store named "The Albion" which became one of early commercial successes in town. In 1819, General Blackburn Moore established Fort Knox in downtown Shelbyville tofortify against Creek Indian attacks on nearby plantations; it served as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant during his War Between the States campaigns against Confederate forces. After Union troops burned down most of Fort Knox in 1863 during an attempt to retake Nashville from Confederate control, local residents began rebuilding their destroyed homes using fieldstone blocks transported from nearby mines and quarries. By 1870, more than half a century after its founding, Shelbyvillians had built up a sturdy brick society complete with churches (the first being Trinity Episcopal), two newspapers (and two daily weeklies), schools (one Heaton School District #1 school opened December 12th 1872), four hotels/motels (including One Hundred Mile Place Hotel – now known as Maycomb Bank Tower – original name: First National Bank Building), three restaurants/bars (including one now known as Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center), twelve stores/convenience stores; eleven used car lots; several hundred cars were parked on Main Street between 1800 and 1930; general industry had replaced heavy agricultural production as town's primary economic activity When Memphis experienced its largest fire ever in 1921—a result of arson by gasoline hooligans starting an orchard blaze—shelbyvillians responded by putting out every single fire they could find before retiring for dinner that night at Red Lion Cafe where they watched television coverage from home while their families cooked over open fires It wasn't until 1981 when then Mayor Loyd Elliott announced plans to redevelop downtown using tax money from new development projects adjacent to Interstate 40 that things really started moving forward The old post office building was razed in 1984 but replaced by present day FedEx Office complex next door which includes several shops including Sears & Kmart ; Pioneer Courthouse Square redevelopment project completed across I-40 from east side continuing northward along main street which includes new businesses such as gas station & grocery store ; current day incarnation contains large number of apartments dating back to 1970s when first case management company entered business there
