Shelbyville is a small town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. The local paper for Shelbyville is the "Tennessean" and it's published monthly. The first people to come to Shelbyville were Dutch settlers in 1692. A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1829, and until 1881 it was named Union Springs after General Ulysses S. Grant's home state of Illinois. In 1881, the name changed to Robertson because that was where General Barton Crouch lived at that time as a military leader during the American Civil War. Robertson County Courthouse Square has been on Main Street in downtown Shelbyville since 1903 when Judge Wm Harnett built what is now known as courthouse square on land donated by his father-in-law, Colonel James Gentry Sr.. The cornerstone for this building was laid on November 3rd of that year by Mayor John Bledsoe and First Lady Fannie Hill Higgins along with other prominent citizens including Senators Hardwick and Jepsen who were then members of the Tennessee House of Representatives from Robertson County at that time; Drury Davenport who served as Medical Superintendent for Knox County during Reconstruction; Mr. Jagger an early settler also living near present day downtown; Mrs. Gentry’s husband died young leaving her with several thousand dollars which she used to build this important facility which still stands today! This building served as county courthouse until 1971 when court proceedings moved to Lebanon due to growth within Robertson County not being able to hold all types of hearings within its borders alone! Today’s courthouse complex replaced a log cabin style structure built in 1827 by Ebenezer Coleman which burned down in 1865 while trying unsuccessfully to expanding his cotton plantation into what became Shelbyville proper! Thatestead (the old house) still stands adjacent to Court House Square property line just south of Interstate 20 & I-65 exit ramp off SR 513/SR 824 about 2 miles east of downtown! By 1960 only 12 acres remained unincorporated within current bounds so a new smaller courthouse building/grounds were constructed just north & east of I-20 Exit Ramp off SR 513/SR 824 just south of Highway 68 exit ramp off US 70 about 3 miles west Of Downtown – becoming operational September 1969!!! Today’s large complex includes 4 Courts buildings (2 administrative), courtroom annexes & gymnasium plus miscellaneous associated structures including Administration Building Annex (now totaling 137 feet long x 43 feet wide x 30 feet high), sheriff’s department substation (now totaling 135 feet long x 45 feet wide x 25 Feet high), jail (now totaling 134 feet long x 40feet wide x 25 Feet high) & restaurant facilities!! courthouse annex back lot remains unincorporated today [July 2016]

In 1868, it became a part of the new state of Tennessee and was its capital until 1906. From 1923-1929, it served as the capital of Hardeman County. In 1812, Colonel Shelby donated the land that now makes up the city of Memphis to Shelbyville for the erection of a public school. The first building in what would become downtown Shelbyville was constructed on this property. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson visited the town and ordered all male citizens to carry arms. This law led to increased gun-carrying among men in the town and helped support Jackson's victory in the Battle of Gettysburg in November 1862.
