The Gun Targets history in Sevierville, Tennessee begins with the Confederate States of America's " GUN TARGETS" company. This company was organized on July 12, 1861 when General James H. Wilson ordered his forces to arm and target practice at Aiken's Landing. The first target was a man standing on a boxcar. The targets were destroyed by Union artillery fire but the practice continued until December 1863 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee abandoned Aiken's Landing and the targets were discontinued. In 1864, Confederates began using rifle ranges across central Tennessee as part of their training for upcoming battle against the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant. Rifle ranges were also used for hunting purposes by residents of Sevierville and Murfreesboro. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union troops near Chattanooga before withdrawing south towards Memphis. As a result, several thousand rounds of artillery ammunition were expended upon gun targets inSevierville during this engagement which left many buildings and houses destroyed or damaged beyond repair. In 1868, an arsenal was built in Sevierville by Jens Jensen to produce cannonballs for use against Yankees in American Civil War battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg Heights (during which time Nashville became known as "The Arsenal"). Artillery balls from this arsenal continue to be used today against small arms fire throughout Davidson County although some projectiles are now made with lead instead of brass for increased accuracy and safety reasons (see Lead Cannonball Ammunition). On October 1, 1871 a large gun show opened up at the Lebanon Agricultural Fairgrounds in honor of King George III who had just been crowned king of England after defeating Napoleon II at Waterloo while visiting Tennessee along with his queen Victoria II; nearly 2 million people attended this event which is still considered one of the largest fairs ever held in this state! The guns exhibited included cannons dating back to Revolutionary War times as well as newer models including modern breechloading rifles like the Gatling Gun! There was also an exhibit devoted to agriculture featuring products from local farmers such as hogs, chickens, ducks etc.; it is estimated that over 100 different types of agricultural products were displayed! One unusual featureof this fair was that there was no admission fee! It remained an important cultural attraction until 1971 when it closed due to budgetary restrictions!!!
