Sevierville is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–Broxton, TN-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sevierville is located on the eastern bank of the Cumberland River and about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Chattanooga. The area that would become Sevierville was first settled by farmers in 1819. In 1829, John Sevier bought 4 acres (1 ha) of land from James Caldwell for $350. After he died in 1835, his wife conveyed her portion to their son James Sevier Jr., who erected a log cabin on the site in 1840. Around this time, other settlers began moving into what is now Sevierville and began to name it after themselves – such as John Sevier Place or Sevierville – although no one really knew why they did so. By 1850, most of present-day Sevierville had been established and there were three stores and two homes in what is now downtown Sevierville whennton residents voted to incorporate as a town on April 6, 1850 In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest worked his way up through Union ranks and offered protection to local farmers when he raided their farms near hereabouts in 1863-64 When Union forces approached from east Tennessee toward Chattanooga late one night on November 21st 1865 following General Sherman's March through Georgia & Alabama (Operation Overlord), Forrest ordered all men remaining behind within easy range of his cannons to cross over the river into adjacent Union territory - which they duly did As a result of this event called "The Postern Gate Massacre", more than 60% of all adult male inhabitants of Knox County were slain or captured by Confederate troops

Sevierville began as a small frontier town named after General John Sevier, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was then given land by General Andrew Johnson to settle. The first store opened in 1852 and it became an important market for goods brought downriver from Chattanooga by steamboats. By the early 1960s, when Sevierville started to grow as a tourist destination due to its natural beauty and historical significance, it had reached its current size with over 2,000 residents.
The community of Sevierville, Tennessee was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1796. The town was named after the Sevier River, which flows through the town. The first post office in Sevierville was established in 1811. The present day Sevierville High School was built in 1914.
