Red Bank, Tennessee is a small town located in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 4,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area and is bordered by the counties of Shelby, Anderson, and Tipton to the south and west, Holmes to the north and east, and Wharton to the northeast. The first permanent settler in Red Bank was John Alvord who founded a log cabin on a bend in Holston River in 1796. A post office called Red Bank was established in 1836, but it did not remain open long because of difficulties with mail delivery. In 1868, Wm. Hine purchased land at what is now downtown Red Bank from Mr. Alvord for $1 per acre. Hine erected a sawmill which soon became one of the largest mills in Hardin County. He also built a gristmill and wagon road connecting his mill with other settlements in southeastern Tennessee. In 1892 he sold his remaining interest in the mill to Jno. Mclntyre for $10 per acre (the present site of RedBank). In 1898 Elisha Vail opened a grocery store on Third Avenue which soon became an important local market for residents of nearby towns such as Decatur and Springdale as well as rural areas around central Hardin County. In 1904 Vail merged his grocery store with that of his brother-in-law Samuel Whitehead into what is now known as Olde World Grocery Stores Incorporated (OWGSI). OWGSI continues to operate today as one of America's leading retail stores catering to consumers across multiple product categories including groceries, electronics/cellular services/itemspictured online through their mobile app,, home goods,. apparel,, toys.....and more! Red Bank experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its role as a manufacturing center for military hardware production throughout southernTennessee.. Red Bank, Tennessee was founded in 1811 by James Robertson. The town was named for a nearby creek that the local farmers used to irrigate their crops. In 1824, Red Bank became the capital of Tennessee and remained so until 1861 when Nashville took over. The area now known as Red Bank was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1840s. Some of these settlers built log cabins along the creek while others constructed more permanent homes such as what is now the downtown district. By 1860, Red Bank had a population of around 150 people and several businesses such as a blacksmith, grocery store, and post office were established. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many of Red Bank's residents chose not to support either side and most withdrew to other parts of Tennessee. Only a few individuals remain in town today including its mayor and some business owners who continue to operate their businesses within its walls.
Red Bank, Tennessee is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Red Bank was founded on October 15, 1884 by Capt. John Fenton and his wife Anna Hutton Fenton as a post office under the name of Red Banks Station. It began as an agricultural community with few buildings and only 10 residents. In 1907, the town changed its name to honor Gen. Hugh Johnson (1824-1909), who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas and Ulysses S. Grant's vice president during Reconstruction in America. In 1922, General Johnson's daughter Julia donated land to the town for a high school which would become Red Bank High School; it opened in 1923. Red Bank became an unincorporated community on March 14, 1951 when it lost its charter to be a village; however, it remains one of Sevier County's most popular tourist destinations because of its natural beauty and historical significance.
