Portland, Tennessee is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of central Tennessee. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The region that would become Portland was first settled by families who came overland from Kentucky in the early 1800s. The area around what is now Portland was part of Greeneville County until 1819 when it became part of Knox County. In 1867, a post office called "Portland" was established in Greeneville County; it changed its name to Portland on July 20, 1868. In 1865, General John Custer and his Union Army were headquartered at Fort Donelson in Corinth, Mississippi; they rendezvoused with General Sherman's armies near Chattanooga on November 7-8th and continued their march to Mobile Bay on December 13th which resulted in the Battle of Chickamauga Ridge where Custer lost his life. This event has been memorialized by various monuments and statues located throughout downtown Portland including one at 10th and Market Streets commemorating his sacrifice.
