In the early 1800s, Portland, Tennessee was a small town with few businesses. The only means of transportation was horse and buggy. Because there was no railroads in that area at that time, goods had to be transported by boat or on foot. One of the first ever optical accessories stores in the area was opened by two merchants named Witherspoon and Cook. They sold telescopes, binoculars, microscopes and microscope cases. At that time, most people used natural light instead of artificial light because it was more accurate and less dirty. Some years later, another store opened up called The Mirror Company which sold all types of optical equipment including telescopes, microscopes and telescope cases. It is said that this store became known as the Mecca for optics enthusiasts in the region. In 1894-1895, an American Optician Society meeting was held in Memphis to discuss new advances in spectacle lenses and mirror technology. Some of the highlights from this meeting included discussion about a new type of prism called an Anastigmatum lens which allowed for clearer images than any other type of prism at that time. This innovation helped set the standard for clarity for many decades to come! In 1922-1923, three men named Prentice (Dick), Harkness (Harry) and King opened up their own store called King's Camera & Optical Supply company located on Commercial Street in downtown Portland during what is now known as "The Gilded Age". This business did brisk business selling photography supplies such as cameras and film stocks along with scientific instruments like microscopes and spectacles! In 1951-1952 another store called J&L Cameras & Opticsopened up located on Commerce Street just south of Interstate 40 between Third Avenue South and Fifth Avenue South! This store became known as "The Arsenal" because they sold all types of camera equipment starting from high-end manual cameras up to digital SLR's! By 1970, there were six stores operated by different companies across Portland with over 25% market share!

Mirrorballs were originally created as devices used in theater shows or operas where the audience would see themselves reflected back into the stage or screen. They were also used as part of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwock novel illustrations when characters such as The White Knight confront villains with mirrored helmets (see Figure 1). Mirrorballs were first made from round objects with a hole bored through them so they could be fitted with mirrors inside and outside of them. These mirrors acted as reflectors which showed what was happening on stage right in front of the audience (Figure 2). Additionally, mirrorballs could also be set up in different positions which gave the illusion that one was looking through another object (Figure 3). From their early days mirrorballs had two types of materials: glass and metal. Glass mirror balls became popular due to their light weight and ability to reflect images well; however, this type of ball lost popularity after plastic started becoming available at a lower price point (Figure 4). 2) From 1853 until 1886 silver nitrate Terrestrial Reflector Balls were produced by Sauter & Morell at Rheinhausen for use by French observers during astronomical observations [5]. The silver nitrate coated spheres measured about 50 cm across and weighed 10 kg each
The first optical accessories were eyeglasses. In 1876, doctor John Fitch of Cincinnati, Ohio, developed a way to make spectacles with lenses made from metal plates that fit over the eyes.
