The first settler in what would become Portland was James Robertson, who arrived on July 3, 1819. He named his new town after himself, Portland Township. The city has since regained some of its former prominence as an educational center thanks to nearby Vanderbilt University and UT Knoxville; however, much of its old streetcar system remains intact today. The first human settlement in what is now Portland was established by African Americans on December 3rd1853 as part of a larger group that included 300 people under the leadership of Captain James Kennedy (1801-68). The settlers set out from Savannah in three boats commanded by Mr. Auld (1792-1864), who served as their captain until his death in 1854. They arrived at what is now Fort Negley on November 12th1853 after spending two weeks exploring various channels near present day Nashville before landing there on December 3rd . Mrs Josephine Nash (1786-1863) played an important role along with her husbands brothers Asahel Nash (1798-1857)and John Nash (1800-58). While not all colonists were pleased with their initial choice of location – some felt that they could not reach enough inland waterways – within days most residents had built homes orchards and stores along fortifications overlooking Duck Creek which river they named for General Andrew Jackson’s victory over British forces at Horseshoe Bend on October 17th , 1812 . Portland rapidly grew into one of TN’s most important commercial centers due to its strategic location between Nashville and Chattanooga while also enjoying excellent transportation options including steamboats up Duck Creek which provided access to points northward such as Marietta and Chattanooga National Military Park while also connecting directly with Atlanta via river cars etc..
