The first guns were made by Black & Decker, and they were called the “Bluedecker Gun.” The company was founded by two men named Black and Decker. The name came from the color of their drawings on the boxes of ammunition that featured blueprints for rifles and pistols. The first handguns were made in 1899 by Wesson Firearms Company. They were called the Browning Automatic Pistol. This pistol was created to replace the Colt Pistol that had been used in America since 1836. It was said that President William McKinley wanted a handgun that could shoot as fast as a revolver and also be reliable enough to take down an elephant. In 1903, Smith & Wesson Corporation started making revolvers under license from Colt Company. These pistols were called the “Smith & Wesson Model 9mm Luger” because they were designed to be used with rounds such as 9mm Parabellum cartridges. The Model 9mm became very popular after it was introduced into service in 1934. It remained in use until 1993 when it was replaced by the Glock 19 handgun model

In 1824, the Oregon Treaty ended the Civil War and designated Knox County as part of Oregon Territory. Portland also has strong ties to academia with two universities – Temple University–affiliated Memphis State University along with nearby Vanderbilt University – providing many high-paying jobs for graduates statewide!
