The first permanent settler in what would become Portland was William Humes who built a cabin on State Road 22 near present day Interstate 75/US 131 intersection in 1824. A second early settler was Levi Coffin who arrived around 1830 along with his family and started trading goods with local tribes along the river for furs and other items they could not produce themselves such as tobacco. By 1835 more than 25 homes had been erected around this site which became known as Old Towne because so many people were living there at once. In 1846 Lovejoy opened up Oregon Territory which included much of what is now eastern Tennessee including present day Portlandia

This fostered economic development that has continued to this day, with several major businesses existing today that were once only minor players in their local communities: Amazon Web Services (AWS), FedEx Ground, Coca Cola Refreshments (KOCH) – all located within blocks or less of each other throughout downtownPaducah!
