Portland's growth continued during World War II as war production increased demand for materials such as wood and metal that could not be produced locally. After the war ended, development slowed as more people returned to their rural homes. However, when Interstate 40 was constructed through Knoxville in 1984Portland experienced rapid growth once again because of its location near I-40's bypasses south of town. Today Portland has over 100 businesses including banks, restaurants, schools (including two high schools), offices/stores etc., making it one of busiest towns on Highway 421 between Nashville and Chattanooga - home to both Music City Airport (Hartsfield International Airport)and Memphis Municipal Airport
