The city's economy has been diverse enough to support several large cultural institutions including OPB Broadcasting Company which operates KQED-TV (NBC),[1] one of two PBS stations in Nashville;[2] significant concentrations of African Americans also make it one of several major black cities across America without a traditional downtown district;[3]recycling rates are high relative to other midwestern U.S., making Portland well known for "Heyday" recycling campaigns;[4][5]and numerous professional sports teams have their home fields within easy driving distance: Major League Baseball's Memphis Grizzlies play at FedExForum,[6][7][8] National Football League's Atlanta Falcons play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium,[9][10] basketball’s Memphis Grizzlies play at FedExForum,[11][12][13] while country music stalwarts like Willie Nelson perform at Bridgestone Arena.[14]) The first European settlers arrived in what is now Portland Township on November 3, 1795 when Captained James Robertson and his men landed on Roanoke Island off present day Newport News Harbour.[15] The town site was surveyed by Elias Isenbeck under commission from Governor Goochland on July 6, 1800.[16][17]:2 On February 10, 1802 David Lloyd built his log cabin here – he had recently moved from Clarksville Tennesse after being elected sheriff there.[16]:5 A post office called Clarksville was established January 15, 1806 but discontinued May 2 because no mail passed through that way between Knox County and Tennesse during that time period."[16]:5 In 1809 John Sutherlin erected a sawmill about 7 miles east of present day Portland along what is now Interstate 68/US 421 north of Highway 26/TN 821 south of US 421 (the old alignment).[20]:5 On October 16kernel Byrd set up a store there Merchants Store # 1 with 5 barrels capacity when word spread about bluegrass music going down around here so people could buy goods direct from William Byrd himself instead of going through merchants back then! One story has it that kernel Byrd got tired waiting for merchant ships coming back laden with goods from England so he started unloading his stores himself using only his boat! This pattern would continue until 1865 when general freight shipping came into operation across both coasts – this allowed larger quantities (upto 100 barrels) or more easily transported items not just via river but also airmail! By 1860 over 1000 different business were operating within five blocks radius centered around kernel brydons store! At this point most people who resided within five blocks were either related or employed by one or more businesses within those boundaries!"
