The history of gun cleaning in Portland, Tennessee dates back to 1881. At that time, the town was known as "The Gun-Lagoon". The town's first gunsmith was Mr. Deaver and his shop occupied the former Blanco Hotel. In 1903, the first municipally owned firearms store opened in Portland. The store was run by J.B. McFarlane and it functioned until 1937 when it closed its doors because of the Depression. In 1938, a new gunsmith named Ransom set up shop in Portland and he continued working at the store until 1951 when he passed away. From 1951-1973, Mr. Emmons served as City Manager for Portland and during this time he bought the old McFarlane Store building which housed his shop from JB McFarlane’s heirs. In 1973, Mr Emmons sold his business to Pscheffer & Sons Guns Incorporated who continued to operate it until 1985 when they closed their doors due to economic conditions within the city limits (Portland had become a suburb). Since1985, there have been several attempts by individuals or businesses to reopen the old McFarlane Store building but all have failed because of lack of support from city officials or funding source(s). Today, only one window remains on the original facade of the building which has been boarded up for over 30 years! It is interesting to note that although many businesses have failed in recent years due to lack of support from city officials or funding sources, there have also been several successful conversions of abandoned buildings into shops servingGun enthusiast around town (eXtreme Outdoors being one such example). It would appear that even though Gun Cleaning History might not be resuscitating any business today like it once did - there are still people out there who enjoy helping others carry out their hobby!

In 1827 Blazers player Jethro McCracken founded an agricultural colony at Whatcom Prairie that became known as McCracken Township;[6] however, most development took place within what is now Downtown Portland proper rather than neighboring areas such as North Park or Albany Heights which were divided into grids by street names only beginning in the 1870s.[7][8][9] Portland began annexing surrounding municipalities during Reconstruction following World War II; by 1960 it had grown to include all but one of Knox County's 23 townships.[10][11] After years of growth stalled between 1990 and 2000 due to a variety of factors including high crime rates,[12][13][14][15], Mayor Vera Katz announced plans to revive downtown redevelopment with a new streetcar network;[16][17] this program finally succeeded in reviving downtown activity in 2006[18]. Despite this initial success story – along with several other economic indicators seeing positive movement over that period – then-mayor Jorge Ramos ordered an investigation into alleged financial irregularities during Katz’s time as mayor; resulting in her being ousted from office after controversial emails were found among her correspondence.[19][20]:25–29
