The first settler to come to what is now Oak Ridge was James Dickey who built his cabin on land that he owned in what is now east side of town. Dickey's cabin still stands today and can be toured by appointment only. Other early settlers included John Carpenter and his family who came from Maryland in 1875 and erected a log cabin next to the present day post office which still stands today as Carpenter's Cabin Museum . Patrick McNamara also settled near the present day school building before coming back East after World War I to found another farmstead called Bogan Place within walking distance of downtown Oak Ridge In 1887 coalmines were discovered underneath the surface of nearby Roane County so someone decided to drill for oil under an old mill site just outside downtown Oak Ridge where they found crude oil grades worth $5 per barrel! In 1898-99 General Electric started production at their new plant west of town followed by other companies over time until all but one closed down by WWII dueettngs around America including many here in Knoxville - leaving us with just GE products! Today we enjoy enjoyable walks through downtown looking out at our beautiful river views as well as some amazing GE exhibits inside City Hall! Oakridge experienced periods of prosperity during World War II when many businesses reopened after being closed during war times such as: Ford Motors (now Ikarus), JBL Marshall Electronic Components (now Texas Instruments), United States Rubber Company (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Wernher von Braun’s Rocketdyne Laboratories, Monsanto Company dye plants etc., however like most cities throughout Appalachia following WWII economic decline set in with few new businesses opening up except for service industry jobs such as construction or truck driving etc.; however more recently there has been some resurgence especially with development along Interstate 20 adjacent to Downtown which will bring much needed vibrancy and revitalization not only for DowntownOakRidge but also surrounding neighborhoods across Hardin County
