The Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL) High Capacity Conversion Facility was one of the first such facilities in the United States. It was built to support the Manhattan Project, and its primary purpose was to convert uranium fuel into plutonium. The facility began operation on August 15, 1945, and produced over 2 million kilograms of plutonium a year. By 1964, it had become an important part of U.S. nuclear weapons programs, and continued operations until 1990. It is now used for other purposes, including research in cancer treatment and energy production. High Capacity Conversion Facilities were first developed during World War II as a way to increase the amount of explosive material that could be converted into munitions without having to use metalworkers or other manual laborintensive processes. This increased efficiency allowed bombers and warships to carry more explosives with each mission, increasing their destructive power while reducing their vulnerability to attack by enemy submarines or air forces. During the Cold War, high capacity conversion became increasingly important as nuclear weapons became more powerful and reliable. Oak Ridge, Tennessee is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,681 at the 2010 census. Oak Ridge is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Apx to Oak Ridge are two small towns - Gurley and West Union - which were also founded in the early 1800s as plantations near present-day Knoxville. When the railroad was built through Marshall County in 1894, most of these small communities were destroyed by the train wrecking that occurred then and often continues to this day. Today'sOak Ridge began as a coal mining community when a railroad was built through Marshall County in 1894. Coal mining continued until 1973 when all mining ceased because of high levels of pollution from methods used during production such as water washing and surface blasting. The first school opened in 1896 and today there are over sixty schools within an radius of 10 miles of downtown Oak Ridge including several private schools located outside of town limits on dark/weekend mornings for children who cannot attend public schools during daytime hours. High capacity conversions have been a common phenomenon in the past. In addition, FAM offered increased flexibility because it could be attached directly to integrated circuits (ICs), meaning that it could be used in an array on a chip instead of being leased out through an distributors network like ROMs had been prior to this time. In 2002, ATI Technologies Inc.'s Crossfire II video card became one of the first devices ever created using Flash Memory-Memory technology[1]. The device was able to support both 2D and 3D graphics while consuming only 1 watt power when connected via PCI Express bus[2]. After experiencing great success with its prototype design,[3], ATI decided to massproduce Crossfire II cards containingFlash Memory-Memory technology across multiple platforms including game consoles like Xbox 360[4] and PlayStation 3[5]. Oak Ridge is a city in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 34,611 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Oak Ridge was founded in 1869 by James Waddell and his wife, Sarah Prentice Waddell. Oak Ridge became a consolidated city on December 15, 1955. Oak Ridge was named after General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon in Virginia. The name may have been chosen because of its similarity to "Ridge" (a Scottish term meaning "hill") or "Warner" (a English name meaning "founder"). A survey conducted in 1869 showed that only about 10% of the inhabitants were farmers and most residents worked for either manufacturing companies or physicians who had moved to Knoxville from Chattanooga or other cities. By 1907 the population had increased to 23,000 and by 1925 it had reached 50,000 with over 150 businesses including banks, insurance firms and power plants. In 1933 it became part of the new Atomic Energy Commission town square district located outside Knoxville proper but within easy commuting distance for scientists working at nearby sites such as Hanford and plutonium production plants run byURLatomic Energy Commission). The first white men to set foot in Oak Ridge, Tennessee were the brothers Robert andWilliam Tennyson in 1827. In 1881, the first oil well was drilled at Oak Ridge and it became an important factor in the development of the United States oil industry.
