Oak Ridge was founded by Dr. John Sevier and his family in 1827 as a depot on the Cumberland Railroad. The community rapidly grew and soon became an important junction for goods travelling between Chattanooga and Nashville. In 1870, Oak Ridge became the first city in Tennessee to be built on federal land when President Ulysses S. Grant authorized the erection of a national capital within the limits of Knoxville. In 1881, Oak Ridge formed part of what would become known as the Tennessean Belt Railway, which transported heavy materials from mines near Knoxville to Memphis for shipment to American Machine Works. The company also developed an oil refinery at Oak Ridge that produced gasoline for automobiles and other products during World War I. During Prohibition, Oak Ridge was one of several American towns that hosted alcohol prohibition rallies led by local bootleggers in order to gain support for their cause. In 1933, following passage of Prohibition Act No. 362, Oakridge's government shut down completely due to lack of funding along with many other Ridgemont communities across America Today few remaining buildings remain from early days at this small town located just outside of Knoxville where life revolved around trade & industry
