This led to a increase in business activity and sparked growth in local commerce and industry including trucking companies such as FedEx and UPS, medical equipment manufacturer Geisinger Medical Systems and aluminum producer Alcoa among others In addition to these large businesses there were many small businesses that grew over time due to access to quality education and job opportunities available right outside their door or through NeighborWorks Chattanooga neighborhood programming Today Oakridge has a highly diverse economy with strength in technical services, health care/medical devices manufacturing, hospitality/restaurants, professional services (lawyers etc.), food processing and grocery stores

Oak Ridge is a city in central Tennessee and the county seat of Knox County. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. Oak Ridge was founded by John Sevier in 1795 as a small farming community on the Cumberland River. Sevier named his new settlement after himself and his brother-in-law, James Cook. In 1814, Oak Ridge became an incorporated town and post office under the name of Clarksville. In 1957, UTCHAMP moved again when West Campusopened adjacent to East Campus on what is now Beattie Boulevard outside of town limits In 1988, United States Steel Corporation merged with International Harvester Company to form International Harvester Incorporated (IHC), which became the world's second largest tractor manufacturer after Ford Motor Company upon its acquisition of General Motors Corporation's tractors business in 1987. IHC also initiated development of major new industrial sites throughout Appalachia including Oxnard Peninsula Site #1 near Sequoyah Falls southwest of Knoxville and Gatlinburg Site #2 northcentralKnox County In 2000, IHC announced it would close all plants worldwide by 2002 due to economic conditions; however, most operations were continued until 2006 when all remaining plants were closed except those at Mexico City headquarters for IHC Americas Wire & Cable Co., which continued production until 2009 pending bankruptcy relief from receivership Today stability has returned to many aspects of local economy since then with several large farm businesses having reopened or grown substantially since then including: Tyson Foods Inc., FedEx Corporation Open air market operations trucking service provider ACE Commodities Pte Ltd., Owens Corning Fiberglas Corp., Beattie Bloc Apalachian Coal LLC etcetera; but some have been forced into bankruptcy such as American Glass Works LLC which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2013 effective immediately while assets had been frozen following liquidation proceedings preceding that filing

Oak Ridge is home to the National Security Agency and other DoD facilities as well as American manufacturers of electronic components and transmitters for voice and text communications such as Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NEC and Broadcom. Oak Ridge has been a center of industry since before the Civil War. A number of companies were founded here including Cumberland Forge Works (now Fuller Mfg.), Knoxville Copper Company (now Alcoa), Nashville Gas Light Company (later TennGas) and Southern Bell Telephone Company. In 1881 Standard Oil established a plant in Oak Ridge to produce gasoline for their new line of cars which became known as "Standard" vehicles. The town's first post office was opened on July 1st, 1881 by Brigadier General John Sibley with five mailbags from Knoxville. Today there are over 100 businesses operating in Oak Ridge with over 350 employees including many small businesses that have become nationally known due to their location or products such as KFC fast food restaurants or Brooks Brothers clothing stores located here in Old Hickory Square downtown.
