TVA became part of the United States Department of Energy on October 3, 1957 when President Eisenhower signed Executive Order 13423 which created DOE's National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL). TVA operated NNL until it was transferred to UTCha on January 2, 1973 pursuant to Presidential Executive Order 13788 which centralized nuclear energy research activities across all U.S federal agencies. On July 1st 1969 UTCha merged into the newly formed Federal Nuclear Laboratory Administration (FNLAA), predecessor to DOE's Office of Science which administers basic scientific research through FNLAA's five operating laboratories: Argonne National Laboratory; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Manhattan Project Organization Laboratories-Los Alamos National Laboratory; Pacific Northwest Research Institute-National Security Complex Laboratories; and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab-. In 1990 DOE transferred management of Argonne National Laboratory from FNLAA to UC San Diego with plans to eventually close that lab but kept Los Alamos and Manhattan Project Organizations Laboratories open pending disposition decision.--(from DOE website) Oak Ridge has been home to some very famous people throughout its history! These include Dr., Winton who cofounded Oak Ridge with his friends Buddy Caldwell & JB Caldwell back in 1939 after donating land for what would become downtown Oakridge today! Other notable residents include James Boggs who served as Mayor from 1951-1957 & helped create & lead the early development of Oak ridge as we know it today! Lastly we have Clyde Van Tassel who played football for UTecha during their heyday back in the 70’s along side future Hall Of Fame inductee Rocky Top Hensley
