Oak Ridge was founded in 1911 by James Van Buren, a U.S. Senator from Tennessee and brother-in-law of President William McKinley. The first reactor was built at Oak Ridge in 1943, and the first nuclear weapon was detonated at Alamogordo Island in 1945.
