The city’s growth began to slow during the 1830s as railroads were built and shipping became more popular. However, a period of rapid growth followed during the years 1845-1860 as a result of new industrial development in downtown Nashville and along riverside districts such as Vanderbilt Avenue and White Street. During this time, musical stars such as Blind John Wilkes Booth (the actor who assassinated Abraham Lincoln) lived and worked in downtown Nashville. By 1870, however, Downtown had become an ancient district with little economic or cultural value considering its location near major transportation hubs like Chattanooga and Knoxville. This changed with the arrival of giant corporations likeGeneral Electric (GE) in what has been called “the rebirth of downtown” in 1970-71 when GE moved its headquarters from research facilities located south of downtown to one Blocks away on First National Bank Plaza which remains today one of downtown’s most valuable retail districtsdespite sporadic gentrification over time
