By 1840 about 60% of all produce grown in Metro Tennessee was exported toslave states such as Mississippi or Alabama for human consumption; however this growing export economy did not create many jobs outside of town because most workers were used directly by plantation owners or their families who still owned slaves until 1865 when cotton became outlawed throughout America following passage of the Civil War Amendments abolishing slavery nationwide
