The name "Murfreesboro" may be derived from Cherokee word "mwur-feh-sah," meaning "pleasant place." In 1815, General John Sevier and his army camped near the present site of Murfreesboro on the Cumberland River after routing a force of Indians led by Major Andrew Williamson. In 1819, General Nathan Bedford Forrest marched through Murfreesboro on his way to join General James Knox Polk's forces in the Battle of Franklin. On November 7, 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Easley burned down most of downtown Murfreesboro during their attack on Union forces under Brigadier-General Samuel Steele. The community was founded in 1870 by pioneers who arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee. The first post office opened in 1870; it was called Sidney and served until1879. A new post office was built in 1887 and named for Captain John Witherspoon (1792-1875), an early settler who died while fighting with the Seminole Indians in Florida during the Mexican–American War. The town grew rapidly throughout its early years; by 1900 there were over 100 businesses operating in what is now downtown Murfreesboro. However,the pace of growth slowed after World War II asmurray became an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for 50%ofthe town's economy until 1970 when that share dropped to 20%. thereafter industrial development increased with restaurants and other businesses opening up along US Highway 36B which bisects downtown Murfreesboro between Third Street eastward and Fourth Street westward

Murfreesboro is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davidson County. Murfreesboro was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1786 and became a town in 1816. In 1846 it became a city and remained so until 1959 when it amalgamated with Danville to form Murfreesboro-Danville. The first Europeans to come to what is now Murfreesboro were Scots-Irish settlers who arrived from Ireland in 1786. They builtLog Cabin #1 on land that currently lays within the limits of the current city of Murfreesboro. The first mayor of what is now Murfreesboro was James Neill and he served from 1800 to 1806. The original town site lay northwest of where present day downtown stands today and included parts of what are now Carbondale and Flower Mound neighborhoods as well as much of central Nashville today includingQuery School District No 7 which sits just east of Query Park Cemetery today). At one time or another all five settlements in this area were named "Murff'resborough" (likely meaning 'place where corn's grown'). In 1816, Presbyterian missionaries organized a religious congregation here and began building churches across Tennessee during the First Great Awakening era that swept America at that time. In 1860, when Nashville became an independent republic under President Abraham Lincoln, many Scots-Irish immigrants sided with his Democratic Party against Republican nominee Stephen A. Douglas because they felt their traditional lifestyle would not be accepted under free government rule - an idea that would later become known as Reconstructionism (although some Scots-Irish people did eventually establish themselves politically inside Confederate States Of America). In 1861, after Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following his army's defeat at Gettysburg, most Scottish Irish living in Nashville went into hiding or seceded back into Ireland rather than return to their homesickness & poverty after years living hand-to-mouth under Union occupation; about 10% actually returned home over several months period leading up to General Douglas' inauguration on April 12th 1865 (only 2% total among all Tennesseans registered for military service during those days). This exodus has been generally referred to as "the flight from Damascus", although there may have been others involved such as families displaced by crop failures caused by disease brought over by Northern farmersukiing Widespread Potato Famine around1850 – 1850 Also contributing factors: Americanization process then going through & many new arrivals being illiterate laborers/farmhands only able to read catechism lessons given orally since no school existed here THEN also lack of infrastructure due mainly to Civil War destruction/lack thereof) . HoweverCherokee Chief John Ross likely knew about this large influx prior thereto (& possibly helped coach fleeing soldiers on proper Indian burial practices)

The first permanent settler in Murfreesboro was John Denton in 1801. A cotton gin was built in 1806 by James Wilkinson and became one of the largest cotton gins in America. In 1827, General Andrew Jackson established a military post at Murfreesboro to support his Indian Wars campaigns against the Cherokee Nation and Mexican insurgents. The town began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location on the Cumberland River and its access to new transportation routes such as the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. By 1840, Murfreesboro had two churches, eighteen stores, fifty-six families and 2,500 citizens. In 1861 Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Murfreesboro while they were advancing through Williamson County towards Knoxville; Forrest's forces killed more than 150 Union soldiers including commandant Colonel Isaac Towanda before being driven back by Union artillery fire into surrounding counties. On November 20th 1865, during the American Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge (now Donelson), Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union troops under Major General Ulysses S. Grant at Murfreesboro; Early's force Killed or capturing over 40 men before withdrawing into Georgia without any losses. On December 12th 1865 Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Jealous surrendered his unit at Grady Memorial Hospital just outside of town after suffering heavy losses against Grant's army during what would be known as "the Battle of Franklin". With this victory early control of East Tennessee passed from Confederate hands to Union hands among other factors that led to Sherman's march through Tennessee in April 1866%.
