Murfreesboro, Tennessee is a small city located in the state of Tennessee. The population was 12,814 at the 2010 census. Murfreesboro is the county seat of Butts County. It is also the location of Memphis, Tennessee. The first permanent settler in what would become Murfreesboro was James Robertson in 1796. He and his family founded a farm on what is now Second Street near Bank street. The town started as a post office called Clarksville on April 6, 1802 under the name of Clarksville for John Davidson who had moved from Nashville to start a new life there after his service in the War of 1812 as captain in General Andrew Jackson's army. The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a town on December 7, 1825 when they voted 5-0 to adopt this proposal by then Mayor Jno. Bledsoe who said "the people are anxious for an efficient government and feel that their rights cannot be fully realized until they have one." The incorporation ordinance stated that it would be "a free and open city" with no religious or political affiliation other than patriotism to America and its Constitution. On November 10, 1830, Judge Wm C Williamson granted land to attorney George H Fenton along Third Street which became part of what would become known as Fortieth Avenue today. In 1861 when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House following Virginia's secession from the Union, most residents chose not to leave their homes and businesses behind and moved into neighboring towns such as Tupelo (to the south) or Mays Landing (to the north). A few hundred turned up at First Presbyterian Church on Main Street where services were held using tents erected there during World War I until May 1921 when arrangements were made for more proper facilities inside the present day building which still stands today along Second Street between Vinegar Lane and Maple Grove Road. On October 16, 1865 two companies from Texas Volunteer Infantry Battalion 296 arrived at Fort Sumter in South Carolina after being recruited by Colonel John S Hill through letters sent through postal tubes from Chattanooga Tennessean Captain David Gist whose unit fought at Chickamauga Creek thus becoming one of only two Ulysses S Grant units ever mobilized nationwide without having received orders directly from Washington D C !!!!! In 1865 General Forrest ordered all military forces within five miles of Memphis turned back so units entered Murfreesboro via Cooke Valley Rd just outside town limits !!!!! So effective was this order that some soldiers spent days Commandeering horses brought across country by families living near Oak Cliff Cemetery before finally surrendering there !!!!! This event has been variously memorialized thru movies such as " Glory", " Patton", etc...! Today much like then many aspectsof our community remain unchanged including our downtown core filled with architecture dating back to early 1800s while Commercial districts growing around riverfront properties & major shopping centers continue to develop throughout central TN
