The following is a history of expandable mount systems used in the military. In 1953, General Electric developed and fielded the first operational expandable mount system for the M1 Abrams tank. This system consisted of two elongated cylindrical turrets that could be rotated about their axes to adjust magnification and range. The turret houses a coaxial machine gun with an extended barrel. The resulting firepower was increased by 10x when combined with an associated optical turret on the vehicle's hull. In 1957, Northrop Grumman developed and fielded the world's first self-loading, extendable (EEL) armored Personnel Carrier (APC), known as Crusader. The EEL APC featured four internal weapons turrets that could be erected either side of the vehicle body, allowing it to carry up to forty-eight infantry soldiers or their equipment. These turrets were equipped with either a coaxial machine gun or a 107mm cannon; however, only one turret could be fired at a time. Additionally, each weapon turret had its own optics and microphone arrays so that troops could communicate with commanders over long ranges while driving or operating the APC. Later in 1957, American Electric Manufacturing released its version of the EEL APC dubbed Viking III; this version featured six internally mounted weapons turrets instead of four as on Crusader and also had additional armor protection against small arms fire and RPG rounds. The Vikings also had an infraRed sighting system to track enemy positions while moving through dense forest or urban environments. In 1990, Northrop Grumman discontinued production of EEL APCs due to low demand; however, they continued development of related armoured vehicles such as light tanks and Jeeps
Murfreesboro is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. It takes its name from Confederate General John Murfee's home town of Murfreesboro. The area that now makes up Murfreesboro was first settled by European settlers in 1796. In 1814, the first post office in Hardin County was established in what is now Murfreesboro. The community grew rapidly during the antebellum period because of its strategic location on the Tennessee River and its easy access to wagon traffic and trade with nearby Kentucky and Georgia. By 1828, it had become one of the most important trading centers on the Ohio River corridor due to its position between Cincinnati and Louisville as well as its strong political influence within the Confederacy. In 1836, Nashville businessman James Robertson founded what would become Robertson's Brewery in what is now downtown Murfreesboro. The brewery became a leading producer of hard cider for export to Europe and helped support early Nashville growth. In 1839, Hardin County residents voted to incorporate as a municipality under the name "Murdersburgh." During Reconstruction following Reconstruction era white supremacy laws were repealed and African Americans began to gain rights formerly reserved for whites such as voting and education opportunities. This led to increased economic development around Murfreesboro thanks in part to new transportation options available after railroads reachedMurfreesboro inthe mid-19th century In 1916, Mayor J C Selfridge persuaded voters not to adopt a pro-Union ordinance referendum providing an opportunity for white southern farmers who opposed Unionism to secede from Hardin County without losing their land or their jobs . After World War II ended there was significant social change across much of Tennessee due primarily to changes brought about by suburbanization which accelerated after world war II through mass migration of people seeking jobs outside city limits
